Thoughts on Sustainability

Thoughts on Sustainability...
or, Who Made That and What Happens When I'm Done With It?

Every day I discover that creating a business is so much more involved than I think...and I'm not just talking the legal, tax and regulatory whatnot, which can of course be very confusing.
Here are just some of the things I've been working through lately:
  • Official name (Linden Tree Herbals)
  • Logo and/or image design (something with a leaf..)
  • Fonts! (descriptive and interesting yet easily reproducible)
  • Packaging (green but professional)
  • Labeling
  • Printing
    • hardware
    • ink
    • paper
    • do it myself or outsource?
  • SUSTAINABILITY
I am really enjoying thinking through all of the details and experimenting in so many new ways.  For example, my current quest is: quirky professional labeling, using non-toxic labeling materials and methods.  One of my most important aspects of production and distribution of what I make is to be as earth-friendly and sustainable as I can. Using the plants and resources grown and created near me feels right and makes me happy. I feel such discordance pairing my green plant friends with non-sustainable and/or toxic materials in packaging, printing, labeling, shipping and all the other things to think about when distributing my creations to the wider world.
After spending what feels like an inordinate amount of time on topics such as How Labels Are Made, and Where Ink Comes From, I've decided to do some experimenting.  I've been photo-documenting as I go, and will share what works (and what doesn't).  Ideas, suggestions and guidance are welcome!
