​Terms of the Trade


​Herbalists use some specific terms to refer to the different ways plants can be used for medicine.  Here’s a short list of those most commonly used by
​Linden Tree Herbals.
 
Bitters:  An extract of bitter herbs that promote digestion. 
(You only need a few drops, but it’s important to taste the bitterness!)
 
Elixir:  A medicinal extract of herbs in alcohol and honey. 
(You don’t need to taste it, but you’ll probably want to!)
 
Liniment:  A medicinal extract of herbs in isopropyl alcohol, for topical application.
 
Salve/Balm/Ointment:  Medicinal herbs infused in oil, combined with beeswax, for application to the skin.
 
Shrub/Oxymel:  Herbs extracted in apple cider vinegar, sweetened with honey. 
 
Tincture:  A medicinal extract of herbs in alcohol 
(Feel free to dilute in water, juice, etc.)
